Ship Reviews

Our first river cruise experience was wonderful. The crew did a great job of taking care of the ship and the passengers . The food, and regional wines, were a true dining experience. All the excursions were well planned, informative and fun. The evening entertainment was fun. The daily cocktails were delicious. Our cruise director was a very busy guy. He was approachable and fun. Always keeping passengers updated on what to expect at each stop. He was also very busy with behind the scene issues with management of the operations of the ship, passenger illnesses and concerns, and the many last minute excursions changes that were made everyday. The director allowed my party to leave our bags with the ship in Nuremburg while we took an all day private tour of Nuremburg. The bags were waiting for us on our return. I also enjoyed the cruise health director, Steve. I participated in some of the daily exercise programs and he stuck with me on a bike tour as I was having difficulty keeping up with the group. Spring is a great time to take a trip to Europe. I would highly recommend a river cruise with Ama Waterways.

This was our fifth river cruise using AMA Waterways. All five cruises have been in Europe and all of them have been exceptional. We have been on the Danube, the Rhône, the Rhine and the Moselle. Some ships have balconies outside the cabin as well as a French balcony and other ships just have French balconies. As far as I know. The outside balconies are a nice plus, although this time I only went out on it once. That was probably both because of the weather at this time of year And because there wasn’t a lot of cruising during daylight hours on this cruise.Planning is comprehensive and well done. The ships and cabins are comfortable and well appointed. The food quality and variety are very good. The personnel are friendly, well informed and helpful and the off ship tours are interesting and typically well guided by local people. So all the way around, we are very satisfied.

TONS of positives Beautiful new boat, excellent bike rides and hikes with fantastic informative guides. Very nice warm pool on deck and plenty of seating in common areas. Workout room was clean and adequate. Steve, the fitness guy, was personable and we enjoyed getting to know him during bike rides, etc. Bikes were in great working condition and the rides were fun. Especially loved Gala, the Strasburg bike tour guide, our Heidelberg and Rudesheim hiking guides and also the canal tour guides in Amsterdam - all fantastic people. (More later about the Cologne guides.) The sip and sail lounge has plenty of games, books, etc for guests to use -- especially appreciated seeing Scrabble and Mah Jongg sets! Our room was immaculate -- housekeeping was INCREDIBLE. Ten Ten, our cleaning associate had a lovely genuine personality and was excellent at her job. Also,, left us delicious chocolates every night. Ilko, the cruise director was very approachable and always open/available for comments/feedback - loved his fun personality and excellent communication skills. Activities were VERY ORGANIZED -- not a moment of chaos or delay the entire week. Evening activities were great - we didn't attend all of them but the ones we saw were awesome. Room for improvement Service and food - our reason for four stars was the food/mealtime. We are in our fifties and very healthy protein/vegetable/fruit eaters. The meals leaned carb-heavy. My guess is most people didn't mind this, but if AMA wants to attract younger active travelers, in their 50s, add more substantial PROTEIN options at mealtime (also fresh fruit on the cheese buffet). Would have loved a nice grilled chicken or steak entree salad as a lunch option and healthy sip & sail options (ie sushi, chicken kabobs, veggies/hummus, fruit etc.) Also, getting a soda refills at meals was challenging - the servers generously offered wine but if anyone wanted a soda or a refill, it was a major ask. On a positive note - the boat offered fantastic wine, cheese and ice cream at every meal and loved the delicious sparkling wine options! The breakfast buffet was also EXCELLENT. Cologne tour guides -- not good. Tried to portray the city as sunshine and rainbows, despite the area's dark past during WWII. For example, the buses parked directly in front of the Edith Stein Holocaust Memorial but guides don't include this in the tour - blatant and intentional omission of history, in my opinion. This was the only city where I felt the guides were intentionally avoiding historical context of Germany's role in WWII.
