Ship Reviews

We have done 2 MSC cruises before covid so are experienced with the line. Chose MSC again due to an itinerary that we liked, that it was well priced, and for us, a trip to Europe is about experiencing other cultures so we are happy to do so on a cruise as well. Overall we enjoyed the cruise. We found that the standard had slipped post covid. Eg, the food standard wasn't as good (eg the amount of care put into desserts at the buffet, less range in the MDR), and passengers were less likely to dress smartly (eg still wearing shorts, couldn't even put on trousers on formal nights.). There were a number of very high needs passengers on board and it is good to see that there is a medium for these passengers and families to holiday together as it must be a challenge. There always appeared to be staff on hand quick to help these passengers getting on and off the ship, eg on the tender at one port. Boarding We joined the Musica in Genoa after catching the train from Menton on the same day as embarkation. Our taxi from the train station dropped us at the port at the luggage drop off area where we left our bags with the staff who were moving them to the ship. It was then a short walk to the boarding area and an easy process to board. While we boarded at 2pm, our bags didn't appear outside our staterooms until 6pm. Room Our room was a balcony on deck 12. While a bit dated, the room was good. Plenty of room for the 2 of us. The bed was comfortable. One problem was that the bathroom light wasn't working and it took several calls to finally have someone come to fix it. I found this frustrating as we'd been travelling for quite a few hours and this was the start of the heatwave through Europe so I desperately wanted to take a shower but couldn't as it was pitch black in the bathroom. Two days later a bottle of prosecco and some petit fours appeared in our room as an apology for the slow service with the fix. While there was the name of our room steward in our cabin and our room was serviced daily, we never met them over the 10 days. On two nights there were outdoor parties on deck 13 and so we had noise those nights when trying to get to sleep but no disturbances other nights. Check your minibar on arrival - the contents of ours didn't match the list, it was missing some things. We were concerned we would be charged for the items. Fortunately the drinks package covered these things (eg cans of red bull) so we could restock the fridge with no cost to us. However, they didn't lock it like it said they will on the last day and it was never checked as far as we know. Food The food has highs and lows. I find the bread good and a reliable pick. There was a good range of food in general but a lot of average quality. The pizza from the buffet was good and so was much of the pasta dishes. There was quite a lot of seafood based dishes (which I couldn't eat due to an allergy). The buffet often has the same dishes as the restaurant. There was lots of fresh fruit (melon, apples, bears, bananas, nectarines, peaches) in the buffet. The best thing I had was a chocolate raspberry tart at lunch on a sea day in the MDR. A number of the cakes/desserts in the buffet had the fake whipped cream which I really dislike. And some unusual things at breakfast like vegetable dishes. The staff in the restaurant are flat out - they work hard for their money. With dinner in the restaurant you can add extra things - eg we would often order the bowl of icecream/gelato along with our desserts as the dessert wouldn't come with cream or ice cream and it was a nice to have the extra element to go with them. We were disappointed that they hadn't put us on a table with other English speakers. It would have been nice to be able to make a connection with other English speakers on a ship where English is a minority language. If we were having to share a table in the MDR, having people who are fluent in the same language would have been good. Drinks We had the drinks package as there was a deal when we booked that amounted to 20 euro per day per person. We are not big drinkers but freshly squeezed juice, some coffees, an aperitif, a wine with dinner and a night cap and maybe a cocktail meant that we got our money's worth. The drinks were generous pours. They didn't have the wine I really liked in the MDR so we would usually get a glass at the bar and take it to our table. We would also grab water and soda to take out for the day with us. Entertainment The shows varied from a bit boring to really good and better than I expected after some early very average ones. Found the bands quite loud in the bars. Went to a few of the afternoon quizzes (we like pub quizzes). Not many people at these, maybe around 20. How many languages were used depended on the that days attendees. White night theme appeared to be taken up by about half of the passengers (more got dressed up for this than the gala/formal nights or any other theme). Other We were cruising during the time of the June heatwave so the aircon in the ship was an absolute blessing. Getting on and off at ports was easy and they sometimes had stands with cold juice near the ship when boarding on the really hot days which was always appreciated.
