First time on the Gem. It's a beautiful ship with nice amenities. I like the excellent complementary restaurants. Really enjoyed O'Shehan's 24 hour restaurant. The food there was great. The service was extraordinary. The buffet on the other hand was very limited for choices and wasn't the best quality. The MDR was very good with excellent service. We had breakfast in the MDR and it was very good. As for the entertainment the first night there was a mediocre comedian. The second night we went to the Battle of the Sexes show. It was funny but not a to notch show. I hope the shows are better on a longer cruise. I've all for a 2 night cruise it was fun and relaxing. We had an inside cabin. It was ok. Wished the beds were separated as it seemed a little tight. The shower was a nice size but the toilet was put in at an angle and was hard to sit on. Embarkation was seamless and went very quickly as was disembarkation. We have no kids so I can't speak for that part
wow , what a great ship , classy we booked last minute , we never book that high , but no noise problems , no rocking right out side the elevator, Wren/ Ren our cabin steward was fantastic . Room , needed a little help Fridge did not work light switch by the bed did not work balcony had old paint on it shower held water , did not drain fast , but a big shower not a round shower , long shower, my husbdan is 6 ft 200 lbs But overall the cabin was fine , we ordered extra blankets and pillow as the air vent is over the bed a giant square , you can of course tunn up the air to make it warmer, but then it gets stuffy. When docked in Nassau , we were on the Ocean Side which was vey nice seeing all the yatchts go by and see Atlantis in the back ground . We ate dinner evey nigh in the Magenta d-room with Heidi she and all were excellent our first time eating in the D-room in a long time as we normally do the have it all package . The food was very good and the mangers stop and ask if eveything is ok. we loved the seating area down past the whisky bar the cocktail server , I think his name is Kaleik , new us by name and had our drinks when we sat down. The great outdoor cafe was nice outside buffet Great bar for Sunsets , it is very busy the day your board Nice lounges The ship did not feel like a sold out ship My husband and I were on rented scooters and we had no problems getting around . We did the outside to get from point a to point b WE even got to go the out island with our scooters , you have to take the tender with an elevator . They had very nice shows on board . Disembarkation was very easy with our scooters , we just got up early had breakfast and got off. Plenty of chairs by the pool adult pool and kids pool all on the same deck . he fit in the shower not problem .
We would definitely sail Gem again. Why? First, the service was amazing. Room steward, guest services, Cruise Director, Main Dining Room Staff, Bar Staff (allstars). They have introduced Sommeliers in the Main Dining Room and Specialty restaurants. We have sailed five times and this was a pleasant surprise and much appreciated. Second, the food was what we expect on an NCL cruise. Specialty dining, we ate at Le Bistro, was top notch. Worth the extra. Recommend! Main Dining Room food was very good. Some dishes, especially the appetizers and desserts, were excellent. Entrees were all good to very good. For diabetics, the no sugar added desserts were different every night and all delicious. Third, the ship itself was beautiful. Having been on the sister ship, Jade, we were really impressed with how the updates brought the decor in line with the new ships all bright and modern. The layout is easy to navigate. And the flow was good so other than embarkation day no huge crowd bottlenecks. The drawbacks that make it 4 out of 5 are the entertainment was lacking. The single production show, Broadway Series: 80s Edition, was very good. But that was the only show. The main performance one night was a comedian, who was very good and entertaining. The rest were game shows: Deal or No Deal (they did this twice) and Wheel of Fortune. These are not shows for the Theater these game shows are second class entertainment. We were hoping for Blazing Boots but it did not happen. Second, the toilet position in the interior cabin is difficult at best. Third, although the casino itself was great, the casino host was rather unfriendly.
My wife and I took this 3-day cruise out of Miami on the Norwegian Gem and the experience could not have been more enjoyable. It was my first time in a suite, and my first visit to Silver Cove at Great Stirrup Cay. I had thought getting a two-bedroom suite without the kids would be over the top, but it was perfect for us. The primary bathroom is connected to the bedroom area, separated by just a curtain, so having another bathroom allowed for more privacy with the toilet. We also used the second bedroom as a mudroom for shoes and coats. I felt well taken care of throughout the sailing, particularly by our room steward and the concierge. The butler disappeared after day 1 so I ended up leaning more heavily on the concierge for the rest of the cruise for things like changing dining reservations, tracking down missing luggage tags, etc. Probably the butler would have done that if I had called him, but with the concierge right there at breakfast every morning, it felt more natural to check in with her. The ship was smaller than the previous NCL ships we have been on (Encore, Getaway), for better and for worse. The better was that the ship was easy to navigate and the shows and dining areas never felt too full. The worse was that there seemed to be fewer offerings overall. We felt this especially with the entertainment — one comedian with shows the first and last night, and a short Broadway revue on the second night. Oh, and lots of game shows. I know NCL is thinning out its entertainment offerings, but the pickings felt especially slim this time around. On other ships I might have expected the same line-up to cover one night. Bars and public spaces got crowded at night and very loud. The bars felt understaffed so we would wait a while for drinks. We appreciated being able to retreat to our suite for the quiet and views of the ocean — I could see how the experience might feel less luxurious without that. Outdoor deck spaces on the ship seemed well organized, a bit less of a zoo than on the Breakaway class ships. We loved the aft deck off the buffet for sitting outside in the evening. For dining, we went to Le Bistro twice and Cagney’s once. It is interesting how these speciality dining restaurants differ from ship to ship. On the Getaway, Le Bistro was the star and Cagney’s was a bit of a disappointment. This time it was the reverse, with Cagney’s by far the dining highlight of the trip. The food and service were top notch. I wonder if they reserve their best staff for that venue because Cagney’s essentially serves as the dining room for the Haven/suites, since there is no Haven dining room on the Gem. As for ports, first up was Nassau. We did a brief walk and then got back on the ship. We mostly treated it as a sea day because the cruise was so short. Our shore highlight was our day at Great Stirrup Cay. We got a lagoon villa on Silver Cove, and it was well worth the expense. It was very quiet, which is what we wanted, and so relaxing. From pictures, I had expected the lagoon to seem a bit small, shallow, and swampy, and while there is sea grass on the ground for much of it, I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was for swimming, how extensive it was, and how nice and deep the water was. The pool was also very pleasant. Not too large, but not too crowded either, with great views. Above all, I liked being able to retreat to the air conditioning when I needed a break from the heat, with the room attendant always ready with a drink. It was overall a beautiful, serene experience that I would highly recommend. The tender back took way too long, even with the priority given to suite guests. Priority only takes you so far when they pack the tenders with people. The whole experience getting back took 45 minutes to an hour. Having the new pier will be a big plus. Overall, then, I would say that the weekend exceeded my expectations! And I would gladly do this itinerary again.
