Ship Reviews

The following review would be the first of several other reviews. My desire be to feature for you what we as a couple had participated in the most. We arrived at embarkation at 12:15 pm; a simple and straight-forward luggage handling and boarding process. While waiting for luggage to arrive in our Deck 7 Vista suite, enjoyed a generous pre-cruise lunch at Terrace Cafe, Deck 9. In Terrace Cafe, each and every day of the cruise, expect an orchestrate-your-own fresh-ingredient salad bar, a tossed-to-order Cesar salad station, an admirable soup du jour, a beautifully flavored roast du jour, numerous choices for grilled-to-your-wish entrees, a spread of always varied charcuterie; absolutely excellent, as well as ultra-fresh baked bread and unbeatable little rolls; during both lunch and dinner, the numerous composed salads create a highlight worthy of some serious level of sampling. The selection of sliced fruits, sweet melons, enormous mounds of summer berries, both stewed and dried prunes, as well as an unusual though welcome indulgence in hazelnuts, raisins and walnuts for coupes of creamy yogurt for breakfast. An omelet composed to their desire be a favorite with many guests. At the daily pasta bar, an authentic rendition of Bolognese sauce with on-the-spot house-cut pasta be a welcome presence throughout our week of cruising. At Terrace Cafe during the daily dinner service, an impressive sushi bar be available; either a ceviche or a cold seafood salad had been a surprising treat. The cordial though professional beverage service of quality wine, crisp cold beer and ever-flowing Champagne always be poured at the proper temperature, in the appropriate stemware, and replenished when desired. Expect to be greeted with white cloth napkins, spotless hotel silver , and heated plates for entree service. The range and depth of the dessert, ice cream and gelato presentation be so generous that to sample any number of classic creations becomes positively required. It's perhaps your only opportunity to access to some of the more unusual European delights that you've only ever seen photographs of. Indulge yourself so that you will have a sound standard for the future. Available always: well-made ice tea, chilled sparkling water, lemonade, hot tea, as well as assortment of machine-blended coffee beverages. On Deck 5, at Barista, all day long, quite a chatty crowd gathers for specialty coffee, creative tea, and nibbles of pastries at all hours. The skill of the barista at the helm be a joy to witness. Aperitifs may be enjoyed while awaiting a meal in the Grand Dining Room. Take special note that a breakfast extraordinaire shall be served to those who truly capture the extravagance of a luxury cruise. Early morning on Deck 5 at the Grand Dining Room had proved quite popular. This would be an opportunity for those of us who perform much of the cooking tasks at home, to allow ourselves the supreme indulgence of relaxing over a well-prepared countryside omelet consisting of potatoes, creamy goat chees, bacon, parsley and cheddar cheese, a bottomless cup of brewed coffee, fresh-squeezed tangerine juice, and while away an hour all to ourselves. This had proved a rarity worth exploring. When you wander up to Horizons Lounge for a 4 pm diversion, well, leave your wrist watch, your cellphone, your obligations in the stateroom. On Deck 10, in the bow of Insignia, at afternoon tea, you will experience a comfort, a leisure, a pleasure that few on land ever have access to. Quite simply, you ease into a upholstered chair, you greet your tea waitstaff with that breezy smile of anticipation, and you settle in to engage in the luxury of intriguing patisserie, scrumptious scones, fluffy domes of ethereal clotted cream, and your own personal pot of earl grey. Insignia scones be tall, fresh and light. Ample though delicate finger sandwiches will be offered by your waitstaff. As always, you dab away those delicious little crumbs with a cloth napkin. The cellist and the violinist together serenade your toward either nap time, or a visit to the gym. As many men as women find themselves pampered at the well-attended late afternoon pause. Insignia appears to be a most socially-respectable near zero refuse cruise ship. Plastic, Styrofoam, thin disposable napkins, all fail to make much of an appearance. Your Insignia evening extravagances: an impressive dinner at either the quiet elegance of the Deck 5 Grand Dining Room, the rich and cozy Polo Grill, or the sublime and exquisite Toscana, both on Deck 10, each meet your satisfaction through differing philosophies of not only meal preparation but also approaches to hospitality. Not any matter where your choose to enjoy the three classic menus, the quality of the raw ingredients combined with the obvious skill in each of the three kitchens be worth deviating a couple of evenings from the Grand Dining Room. Future Cruise Guests: please consider honoring your entire cruise staff by dressing for the privilege of dining in the refined atmosphere of each and every dining venue. It seems much easier for a woman to dress up by wearing a pretty necklace and a casual summer dress. Men might want to consider wearing their most sophisticated collared dress shirt, clean and polished shoes, and a handsome wrist watch. The Insignia sunset shall catch every enchanting nuance of a well-dressed guest. Note too, that during the evening meal in Terrace Cafe, dining tables be reset with smooth white tablecloths and sparkling stemware. So although Terrace Grill offers a pleasing selection of self-directed dinner, still the level of formality has increased a notch or so. The Grand Dining Room had served a series of splendid appetizers: beef Carpaccio, a crushed fingerling potato and caviar delight, a luscious lobster bisque. The 7 oz. grilled fillet in Polo Grill would not be bettered at any restaurant on land in any State in this nation. By the way, it would be accurate to categorize dining on Insignia akin to dining, not in a ship-board restaurant, but rather a series of private club dining rooms. Absent be the disturbing confusion, the noise, and the odd distractions of a conventional American restaurant. Insignia be relaxed, peaceful, considerate, and as an ultimate experience, refreshing. Linger, laugh and love in its luxury.

This was my first Oceania cruise. It sailed round trip New York City-Bermuda. Originally, there was going to be a day visit to Newport RI, but that was cancelled, in advance. We had one overnight in Hamilton and two at St. George's. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. This was my first "small" ship cruise experience (under 700 passengers). That allowed us to dock directly at downtown Hamilton and St. George's and not have to travel back and forth to the dockyard meant for larger ships. That was an advantage. I've also learned that the disadvantage of a smaller ship is fewer choices: shorter meal hours, few excursion options, fewer entertainment options, etc. Less isn't alway more. There were few children on the ship, which makes sense; the only activity meant for them was time at the pool. Oceania is famous for its food. It was very good, even excellent at times, though I can't say I haven't had good food on several other ships. Afternoon tea, which we tried once, was bad all around. The service was not competent (unlike the service at specialty dining, main dining room and buffet), and the pastry and sandwich options for tea were paltry and uninteresting. Given Bermuda's British history, we really felt that afternoon tea should have been nicer. The Polo Grill steakhouse was good; the Toscana Italian restaurant was outstanding. That was a perfect experience. It was disappointing to us that the dining room and buffet closed before 2:00 pm every day, even as early as 1:30 pm. This meant that if we were returning from a long morning excursion, we missed lunch.. Hamburgers and hot dogs, a few types of sandwiches, salads, and ice cream were available until 4:00 pm at the Waves Grill, but that food was definitely of lesser quality. The milkshakes and smoothies there were concocted from pre-made mixes, and tasted artificial and just plain bad. We were in a penthouse cabin on Deck 8, so I'm sure we had more space than some other cabins. Cabin service was excellent. Oceania is pricier that the cruise lines with larger ships. We had a pleasant experience, with a few disappointments. Our cruise was very nice, but I'm just not sure that, overall, this was worth the higher price. YMMV
