Ship Reviews

Here is a review of our Riviera Alaska cruise from July 8th to July 17th, 2025, round trip from Seattle, WA. This was our 1st Oceania cruise. Embarkation: We live in the area, so we arrived about 5 minutes early for our Noon timeslot. It didn’t seem to be an issue as we went right through. The process was fast, but I suppose that might have to do with the smaller passenger size compared to the larger ships we are accustomed to. I was told there were 1230+ passengers in total of the 1250 double max. More than they had in the previous couple of cruises. Cabin: Concierge Suite, starboard side, right next to the laundry and a few doors down from the Concierge Lounge. Picked for this specific reason. The cabin seemed slightly smaller than it appeared in the photos, but it was overall lovely. We were initially concerned about the closet space but soon discovered all the various storage locations and utilized them all. (We’ve never used the drawers in the bedside cabinets or the desk area before, but we did this cruise!) The bed was very comfortable but lacked the side/edge support we are used to, so when sitting or lying near the side, we always felt like we were sliding off. The updated bathrooms are beautiful, but I am not a fan of rainfall showers and can’t wait for them to go out of style. For our next cruise, I would forgo the Concierge and opt for an Oceanview or Veranda, as the minor upgrades were not worth the cost, in my opinion. Internet: Terrible. We had the basic package, and I upgraded to the streaming service. What a waste. Slowest internet I’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship. No idea why the vaunted Starlink was so slow and useless. Concierge Lounge: I was excited to have access to this area, but it turned out we rarely used it. I thought my wife would appreciate the coffee and snack access, but we would often wander to any nearby bar/seating area and order a latte there if we wanted one. The space was small, with only a few seats available. The food selection inside was minimal, more so than we’ve seen in other, similar lounges. I hate to say it, but the cookies sucked overall. I have no idea why, but Riviera couldn’t make a cookie that my wife or I enjoyed. Most other desserts were sublime, but the cookies were all dry and crumbly. Food-GDR: Fantastic. We felt this was the best food we’ve ever had on a cruise ship. Granted, we’ve never done an upper-tier line, but it was fantastic. My Wife only had one bad experience due to extra fatty meat (she can’t stand any fat; she cuts it off). We ate breakfast and dinner here most days, except when we were in a specialty restaurant. We never saw the GDR more than half full at any service, which was odd to us, as most MDRs on mass-market lines are typically quite full. Food-Buffet: Good. We tried and enjoyed all three mealtimes here. Breakfast was good, if standard. Scrambled eggs were always runny for some reason, so the two egg stations were a good alternative. Bacon was rarely crispy (almost undercooked) but still tasted good—no complaints during lunch or dinner. The staff were highly attentive, almost to a fault. We loved interacting with them all. Coffee, soda, and drinks never ran out in the Buffet. Passengers themselves were the only obstacle, sometimes stopping and blocking all traffic or cutting in line when several were waiting. I had no problem telling some entitled folks to move or wait in line. Food-Specialty: Very good. Again, some of the best at sea for us. Toscana was fantastic, better than most of our local Italian restaurants. Polo was outstanding, and my wife said her Petite Filet was the best she’s ever had. Mine cut like butter and just melted in my mouth. However, we did not enjoy Jocques, as French cuisine is not our thing. We gave it a shot, but we will skip it on the next cruise. Red Ginger was our favorite of the four. Everyone seemed to get the sea bass, but I had to try the lobster Pad Thai. Food-Waves Grill: We ate here twice. Had a good but not great burger the first time, had the fish sandwich the 2nd time. Enjoyed the fish. We also came back for the pizza one night and thoroughly enjoyed our own pizzas. Entertainment: I’m not sure. I never went, but my wife did attend our CD Carson’s show and loved it. We attended two of the four enrichment talks and learned a great deal from them. Glo (Gloete Massie) was an excellent instructor who kept everyone's attention with group involvement, humor, and great storytelling. Shopping: Nice but limited. Expected of a smaller ship like Riviera. I was uber surprised at the lack of Oceania-branded merchandise. All I wanted was a dang hat, but nope. The crew had a nice one I wanted, but it wasn't for sale. Library: All cruise ships should follow the example of HAL and Oceania, offering extensive and spacious libraries. SPA: We enjoyed the services we received, but not the interactions. As a separate group onboard, they continued to push the sale of additional services or products aggressively. They also automatically added 20% gratuity to the bill for our convenience. Right. My wife won one of the day-one drawings for $100 off a port day service. They wouldn’t apply it to a Couple Message but would to a single session that included an extra 25 minutes due to being in port. We signed up for two concurrent messages at the same time in Juneau. After the message (which they sent as a couple), they informed us that we had received the extra 25 minutes for the port day, but they couldn’t add the $100 discount too. We’ve learned NOT to argue with the Spa folks as it gets us nowhere, so I just signed up for the Facial and Shave to use the $100. They honored it then. Ports: Seattle – Ketchikan – Juneau – Skagway – Hubbard Glacier – Sitka -Victoria – Seattle. We love Ketchikan, but not the Ward Cove dock. NCL wanted its own dock, but it was a bit annoying to take a shuttle when all the other cruise ships docked next to town. We were next to each other and dwarfed by the NCL Bliss there. It is almost comical to see the size disparity. Juneau was a tender port and quite rainy, so we opted to stay onboard (this is our 9th Alaskan cruise, we think). We had forgotten that we were even going to Skagway. Misjudged the weather, so we got off prepared for windy, cold, and rainy conditions, but it turned out to be warm and sunny. Go figure. Hubbard was sunny and beautiful, perfect for viewing. Sitka had its nicest day in weeks. My wife went into town without me, but discovered a shop I would have enjoyed, so that probably saved us some money and extra items to carry back on the ship. Victoria was the only excursion we planned, doing the Empress Teatime and city tour. We had a wonderful time; I would love to go back. Everyone there apologized for the excessive heat: it was only 72 degrees F. It was nice to spend more than 4 hours in port (we were from 1:30 PM to 11 PM), which is more than the standard 7-day cruises do. Cooking Class – My wife took a Northwest-themed cooking class, and she really enjoyed it. She wanted to do more of them, but she had one of the last classes available. Maybe more next time. Disembarkation: The Saddest day of the cruise. As independents, we were among the last groups to get off. There was a slight hiccup with someone taking the wrong suitcase (our “shoe” suitcase), but it was resolved relatively quickly (a good reminder to always have your contact information on your luggage tags!). Overall: We were scared we would enjoy this cruise TOO MUCH and would be forced to cancel all our other mainstream line cruises so that we could get this level of satisfaction and enjoyment again. While mostly true, the cost is still a limiting factor for us currently. We loved the smaller yet still large enough ship. We loved the décor and all the public areas. Food was spectacular for most meals. There were more children than I was expecting, but not enough to ruin anything. Twice, there were loud and crying children in the Buffet and another in Red Ginger. It seemed that the staff were doing all the parenting then. No number of annoyed stares could dislodge these bad parents/grandparents. We both had the standard drink package (Wine and beer at lunch/dinner), and we upgraded the wife to the Prestige package so she could enjoy more cocktails. She enjoyed each drink, even the mint mojito that didn’t have any mint in it (they fixed that right away). I want to compare this cruise to Oceania to Viking someday, just as soon as Viking changes that asinine 18-month full payment date crap. For the price (based on an Alaskan cruise), Oceania is superior to the comparable offerings of any mainstream cruise line we have cruised with. NCL Haven is more expensive per day, and you get less. HAL’s Neptune Suite is comparable once you get all the options, but Oceania has better cuisine and nicer ships by far. Princesses are more expensive for anything Suite level and above, and you get far, far less. Additionally, we received numerous food complaints from the two ships we encountered (Royal and Sapphire). When we can, we will do Oceania again.

Attention to detail, active listening and incredible food are just a few of the advantages of cruising on Oceania Riviera. My husband and I left Seattle, WA on July 27 for a 12 day Alaskan Cruise, coming back to Seattle on July 29. Magical - yes. Awe inspiring - yes. We had 11 days of liquid sunshine and one day filled with fog and rain! Did I need my parka - no. Crew and locals could not believe our weather. Yet no one has control of weather. Oceania, however, does have control of who they hire to work on this magnificent ship and they had an incredible staff. The one day that we had fog and then later on in the day rain, was in Juneau. 10 minutes prior to getting on the bus to go to the helicopter pad to have an up close look of the Glacier and then to go to the dog sled camp and ride in a dog sled, the tour was canceled due to the weather. This excursion was the number one reason we booked this trip. The tour operator told us to speak to the Oceania rep who was on shore assisting others in this situation. This crew member actually listened to what I was saying. He understood that it was the dogs I had come to see. He worked a miracle and was able to get us on the Summer Camp Dog Sled tour, not on ice, on the ground, but I was able to interact with these majestic animals. I am still sad that my original tour was canceled but I had my pilot’s license in my earlier days and even as I stood in line, I knew it was going to be canceled. I was so grateful to that crew member who took the time to comprehend the situation and then had the initiative, the resources and the ability to get my husband and I on that summer camp dog sled tour. This is just one example of why Oceana continues to receive my business. An incredible cruise, but an even more incredible cruise line: Oceana!

My husband and I haven't been on cruises since the mid-1990s (before we met), and our experience on the Oceania Riveria was absolutely fantastic. The ship is beautiful. We had a Concierge Veranda room and it was spacious, and we were pleasantly surprised at how large the bathroom was and the storage in the bathroom and room that allowed for all of our clothes and bathroom products. We loved that there were only 1200 guests on the ship, unlike the larger ships that can carry 5000+ people. Very much enjoyed the specialty restaurants, we went to all 4 of them. Different experiences, and enjoyed sharing rooms with other travelers. The pizza at Waves Grill was very good. Do recommend purchasing the beverage package, as it covers many cocktails, some high end specialty cocktails are not covered, like Saki in the Red Ginger restaurant, but that was not a problem for us. The stateroom attendants , Augst and Josey, were so friendly and our room was always in great condition. We loved the Team Trivia, Bingo and the casino! We loved all of the ports, with Sitka and Victoria, BC being 2 of our favorites. The people who live in Alaska are so kind and want to share with you about their beautiful state. Our cruise director Carson, and asst cruise director Kat were fantastic and so much fun. Everyone who works on the ship always said hello as you saw them throughout the ship. I think I only came across one staff member who was not having a good day. Can't wait to return to another cruise on the Oceania Riveria.

Service: Absolutely the highlight of the entire cruise. The staff was fast, quick, did things I’ve never would have expected. My bed was made and roomed cleaned almost everytime I left for more than 2 hours. Food: food was pretty good, no complaints. Not gonna say it’s the best in the world but it’s leagues better than anything I could do. Good amount of varieties and options Entertainment: This ship works really hard to get you out your room… there’s practically nothing to watch on TV so don’t expect to be entertained there. The internet can also be a bit spotty but you’re in the open ocean so I expected this. Issues: we had a severe chemical leak, we had to evacuate are rooms for 8 hours… this was coordinated extremely poorly and the choline gas was tremendously bad. Had people wake us up with gas masks on, was very unsettling Peers on the ship: Average age of people on the cruise is probably mid 60’s. If you have good knees I’d avoid the elevators and use the stairs because they are in constant operation due to the age demographic aboard this ship. Excursions: all were pretty fun, only thing I’d suggest is maybe enjoy the town of some places over the excursion, many are tailored for the wilder crowd, which means a lot of sitting on a bus or sitting on a boat… got really bored of just sitting… Gym: the gym is like a premium hotel gym, average at best. If you like treadmills you’re good, if you want to lift weights you have basic machines and dumbbells up to 50’s. All in all… the biggest negatives I found about this cruise was lack of interesting entertainment options. It felt like if you wanted to watch TV and relax you had nothing much, the excursions could get dull if you’d rather have a more “active” experience. The way the handled that gas leak was horrendously poor but I don’t think they had an action plan for that. The workers were subjected to that chlorine gas wearing nothing but medical mask coverings which does absolutely nothing. They would run out the locked hallways gasping for air trying to get passenger items… was very unsettling. All in all though, I just felt like on the boat specifically… if you weren't eating, sleeping, drinking, you more or less had to be at the casino for entertainment… the music nights were good but an entire day on the water you don’t have that much to do. It was a good taste of Alaska, amazing views, a couple good excursions. Maybe I’m not much of cruise person, or I was expecting more to do. I feel like if you want to just lunge around, eat good food, read, take pictures, paint and sleep this is a wonderful thing to do.

Sirena does not offer any dedicated Kids & Teens facilities. On selected cruises, however, the Alaska Explorer Youth Program is available: For guests who travel with children, Oceania's Alaska Explorer Youth Program offers the opportunity for everyone to experience the excitement of exploring the Northwest Coast and Alaska in a meaningful, enriching way. Designed for age groups between 5 and 12, the program is supervised by experienced and enthusiastic youth counsellors and includes games, activities and Alaska-inspired special events.
