Ship Reviews

My wife and I recently disembarked the crown princess after a cruise around New Zealand. We had read negative reviews about the Crown being ‘tired’ and facilities needing upgrading etc. While we did find the ship in need of a refresh generally, this tired old girl still delivered in many ways. The crew were really friendly and accommodating. Our cabin was clean and comfortable and the dining experience was outstanding; we chose the dining option that comes with a Reserve Mini-suite and wouldn’t choose any other option from now on. Some negative feedback on entertainment (below par generally - we stopped going to the theatre as a result), too much sprooking by far - almost every so called ‘enrichment’ talk had a commercial angle, which got quite tiring after a while. Not enough activity provided for teens on board which saw ‘gangs’ of them hanging around stairwells and running up and down passages. However, by far the most negative aspect to this cruise was that we contracted Covid 19 4 days before the end of the cruise and spent those days in isolation in our suite. Although we very much enjoyed our time onboard, we are very concerned about the protocols (or lack of) when it comes to this virus. Considering that cruise ships, and in particular, Princess were seen as ‘Ground Zero’ during the original outbreak of Covid in Australia, one would think this line’s protocols would be second to none. Well, think again! We were advised by the medical team onboard that we only needed to isolate for the first 24 hours after diagnoses. After that, we could go back to normal operation…albeit with masks. We could attend all public events, eat In the dining room (can’t wear a mask while you’re eating - but all good!). Most official medical sites advise that you are infectious for 5 to 8 days after diagnoses, sometimes for longer, and yet the medical advice onboard this princess ship was 24 hours - 48 hours if pushed by the passenger. No wonder we contracted this virus on the ship; there must have been passengers who contracted it and after 24 hours in isolation, continued their activities, spreading the bug piecemeal everywhere. We chose to remain in our cabin until disembarkation because we felt responsible to everyone onboard for not passing it on. But the cruise line, after 48 hours, no longer afforded us special services such as room service meals etc. Basically the ship wiped it’s hands of us and left us to our own devices. Shame Princess and for everyone else thinking of taking a princess cruise….beware!

Good late season cruise on the Crown Princess despite the weather's attempt to spoil the party. The Crown Princess is a beautiful and well- maintained Grand Class ship that had an excellent Captain and fabulous crew that worked hard the entire cruise. Faultless in this regard. The food, particularly main dining rooms was some of the best we've experienced on a Princess ship and although she's a little tired and dated in some areas there was little need (or room) for complaint. The Crown was embarking on the world cruise at the completion of this voyage and the crew were notably very active carrying out maintenance and upkeep on the run. A little quirky in some areas of design and smaller public areas would mean a 'no' for us in terms of an extended voyage such as a world cruise but certainly fine and serviceable in every regard for the day-to-day Australian cruise season itineraries. Happy to sail on her again but the Royal class ships are probably more to our liking and will be first choice for the longer cruises we personally prefer.

I travelled with my 91 year old father, on his first ever cruise, my 3rd. I have previously cruised with NCL and Royal Caribbean. The Good: Food in the Horizon buffet was generally great. We ate there most of the time. The burgers and pizza on deck were amazing and probably our favourite food on board. We ate in the dining rooms on 3 occasions, 2 of which the menus were good, 1 disappointing. Staff in general were all friendly, efficient and helpful. Cabin was clean and comfortable. Entertainment in the Theatre was, on the whole, very enjoyable. Atmosphere and music in the Piazza were great, and the entertainment staff were friendly, approachable and did an amazing job all round. The attention to cleanliness and hygiene was thorough and constant (with the one exception mentioned below). The Bad: Lack of seating for long stretches and in lift areas. I understand OHS would make this difficult, however even some narrow, fixed stools would have been appreciated, especially around forward lifts. The demographic was older people and the lifts were in high demand, often with long waits. The other minor issue we had (along with others I spoke to) was the volume in the Theatre. I am no sound engineer, so don't know the correct terminology here, but the volume of the house band (they were very good) drowned out the main performers in most of the shows we saw, which was a shame. As I said above, cleanliness was generally great. The exception was the burger bar on the deck. During busy times, there was a staff member in front taking orders and handing out laminated numbers. These numbers recirculated constantly, sometimes being held in the same hands that people were coughing into. It was worse when it was quiet, as there was only the cook in attendance. On 2 separate times the grill cook took my order, handed me my card, prepared my hamburger, then took my number, all while wearing the same set of blue gloves. Not blaming the cook, he was there alone, but there must be a better system. The Bad: The only 2 negative experiences my father and I had over 17 days both came from fellow passengers, so no shade on Princess! All in all a wonderful trip. We have just booked New Zealand February 2026 on the same ship.
