We just got back from our cruise and overall it was probably the best one we’ve been on. There were a few minor inconveniences though, things that might bother some cruisers more than others. I’ll start with the pro’s- 1) the embarkation was top notch. We’ve been on a lot of cruises and this was the smoothest I’ve ever seen. We were off our shuttle and sitting inside having a drink in less than 20 minutes. 2) every staff member we encountered (except maybe 1 or 2 having a bad day) were super friendly and accommodating. 3) the specialty restaurants were wonderful. We especially loved the steakhouse. 4) there were a lot of activities throughout the day. Plenty of options to keep you entertained. 5) enough lounge chairs to lay in the sun without having to fight for one. My biggest complaint has to do with the spa… so here are the cons- 1) the spa seems to be poorly managed. For one thing, they are too busy trying to sell additional products to let you enjoy the services you paid for. After spending $500 on a couples massage, they spent 20 minutes trying to sell lotions and finally ended with saying “you don’t care about your skin” when we refused to buy. Also, we purchased the thermal retreat for the week. On day 1 when we went in, all 8 heated chairs had stuff on them, but no person was laying on them. After about 15 minutes, I went out and asked the workers if they could move something since they weren’t being actively used. The employee told me they reserving them was not allowed and that I could move stuff off. I felt like they should be the ones to move stuff, but finally went ahead and moved a ship towel off 1 chair. Again, there were still no people on any chair, just their stuff while they were in the steamer or pool. Right as I was about to lay down, a man came out of the steamer, yelling at me for taking his chair. I don’t feel the employees handled the situation very well. They should make sure everyone is on the same page as far as what is or is not allowed. It was so upsetting that we never returned to the spa, money wasted for our package that we didn’t use. 2) the room carpet and furniture is run down and stained. The couch is not one that you can sit on. 3) we were in the aft, which was a beautiful spot. But the soot from the smoke stack came directly onto it. So the balcony floor and furniture were covered in black that then transferred to skin & clothes. Once we realized this, we just made sure to put towels down before sitting. But something to be aware of. 4) our bathroom smelled like sewer pretty bad. It would usually dissipate after we put water down the shower drain, but it was annoying
Our experience was memorable! Our room steward decorated our cabin to celebrate my husband’s birthday which was on embarkation day. Two scooters were in our cabin when we arrived and our steward removed one to return it and activated one for my husband’s use. Service and food was delicious and beautifully presented. The lack of a true Promenade Deck was disappointing. The Cruise Director was easy to understand and very informative. The weather was beautiful and the sunsets spectacular . The tender service in Cabo San Lucas was a little rough. However, the crew was excellent in assisting my husband who was walking with a cane. The kids club was excellent in that we didn’t experience childish pranks like pressing all the elevator buttons during our cruise. Disembarkation was a little chaotic and we had to walk long distances to retrieve our luggage which was tough for my husband. All in all, it was a fun cruise and I didn’t have to cook.
Overall, the cruise was good and provide us with the break we needed. We both needed a relaxing experience and this cruise fit the bill while bringing us to a couple of ports we had never experienced. The positives outnumber the negatives. Good food, good service, friendly crew, decent entertainment (comics were fantastic) and the specialty restaurants (Sabatini's, Crown Grill & Crab Shack) absolutely rocked. The only negative we have is the tender process in Cabo San Lucas took far longer than we would like. The following are not necessarily complaints but did affect the rating. The Princess app was not 100% accurate as some events started at a different time than the app showed. The "walk-in" dining room wanted us to come back later as opposed to waiting in line which is contradictory to common sense. If I go to a restaurant without a reservation, I should be able to wait or they need to provide a paging system to let me know when a table is available.
We had reserve collection dining which was excellent. The first evening was our anniversary and the staff provided us with a memorable dinner. The service through out the ship was excellent. The disembarkation process was one of the easiest I have experienced. We booked transfers to and from the ship. Our flight was delayed two hours and almost missed our transfer to the ship. My wife had to chase down a Princess representative to avoid missing the last bus to the ship. Our complaint is with the cabin. Although we booked a reserve collection mini suite the cabin left a lot to be desired. The sofa which was a hide a bed was not usable to sit on. The cushions were so old that one could feel the bars when sitting on the sofa. There were only two electrical outlets in the cabin and no usb ports. There was rust around the door frame in the bathroom. I would not advise booking a cruise on the Royal Princess.
