I was traveling solo on this nice 11 day cruise to Alaska out of S.F. Embarkation (as well as disembarkation) were seamless and FAST! I took a Princess transfer from the airport (SFO) to the port. In 1 hour and 5 minutes, I got from the airport and into my stateroom. And that was with traffic and a game at the ball park that day. The return transfer was faster...no game at the ball park... My cabin was very clean and kept that way by Johnonel. Filled my ice bucket every day, without asking. Always greeted me in the hall, asking if I needed anything. I reported a small leak in the shower head to him...it was fixed by the next day. The crew was friendly *everywhere* (except one not worth mentioning...at Good Spirits no less! OK, I mentioned it...lol) I was on the Premier package (which was certainly worth it!) I had booked my reservations months in advance so there was no hassle after getting on board. So it was Crown Grill and Sabatini's. I alternated each night. I thought the food was quite good at both establishments...however, I cancelled my last two reservations at Sabatini's. Why? Well, the service was spotty. No one really seemed to know what was going on...the staff did not communicate well with each other. Example: Asked if I wanted the wine list...never showed up until another person asked...and brought it. I could see the folks at the next table were, ah, feeling a bit left out, too. We chatted about it and agreed that there was certainly some lack of communication going on. The Crown Grill was the exact opposite. Everyone there worked like a well-oiled machine. Items arrived in a timely fashion and were still hot. I saw no one rolling their eyes or turning around looking for help... I ate in the MDR twice as a result of cancelling my other reservations (Da Vinci). I must say service was prompt and the food was quite good. I ate breakfast and lunch fairly often in the Botticelli MDR. Service was okay for the most part *except* getting coffee in the morning. It seemed it was rarely ready if you showed up fairly early. I watched the containers arriving 4 times at he start of my various breakfasts. This was about 15 minutes after the doors opened. I could see that none of the people around me had any coffee either...then it would suddenly show up. Used room service twice...orders arrived timely and hot. Used Ocean Now from the Explorers Lounge...never showed up. I had ordered a hot dog and fries. Got tired of waiting. Went up to the Salty Dog grill, got my stuff, brought it back. Got my beer from the bar. Status hadn't changed from 'Preparing'. A little later it went to 'Delivered'...uh, not. Never had any problem whatsoever getting drinks at any of the bars on the ship. (except 1...I waited a whole 3 or 4 minutes...lol) Had tolerable weather at each port! It was cold (low-to-mid 40s) and always seemed to threaten rain, but it did not appear. I was very surprised as this wasn't exactly the time for agreeable weather in Alaska. I had brought appropriate attire for rain *and* snow. I, happily, ended up removing clothes during my adventures! I booked 1 Princess Excursion (Totem Bight State Park) in Ketchikan. IT was smoothly run and our guide, Klark, was very informative...I tipped him well...he really made the tour interesting. I did whatever I wanted to at the other ports. (Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria) Note that I have been to these ports before, some 3 years ago, on Cunard. Frankly, I would not rate one over the other. I enjoyed both. In Victoria, I would recommend walking over to their version of Fisherman's Wharf. It's about 1 12-15 minute easy walk. Now, it is nothing like, say, S.F. but it is quaint and attractive. I ate some good food there. Be aware this is mostly a visual experience with only 1 gift shop. While there, I took a water taxi around the harbor. Reasonably priced and fun. This itinerary also included Glacier Bay. Now, I have read many posts of folks being knocked out and raving about it. And I expected crowded decks, etc, during our cruise of it. (This was a full ship BTW) Just wasn't the case at all. The Promenade and Skywalker's had plenty of space to walk around and take pics. Deck 19 was all but deserted! Not complaining, of course! Now, honestly, I am glad that I didn't book this cruise just to see Glacier Bay. While the two glaciers we stopped at (Margerie and Lamplugh) were certainly photogenic, especially the blue colors present in both, I guess I was spoiled by Hubbard Glacier a few years ago. Now, you can say I am comparing apples and oranges, or perhaps these guys weren't on their best behavior that day (saw exactly 1 calving, but, hey, it's just an opinion. Did I have a good time? You bet! Would I tell others not to bother? NO! I thought I had done adequate research but I didn't. My bad...lol. I rated the experience, 'ok'... Did not frequent any of the Princess Shops save their gift shop. So no comments on those. Just not my thing. Guest Services? Only stopped by twice, and didn't wait long (non-suite) so not a lot to say... All the normal activities, most of which I didn't attend. Did the games, some bingo, Deal or No Deal...some lectures. All were smoothly run and pretty well-attended. Didn't do any of the shows. One was a Lionel Ritchie Tribute. No thanks. I liked him but... Did do the comedy shows...2 really good and 1 really, really bad. (And I can't find my crib sheet right now...sorry. The bad one was a woman who started with a video of her past glories...and it went downhill from there. I didn't laugh once. Please forgive me for the lack of a name...) Now, we all know the Ruby is an older ship. (And I'm an older guy! ) I thought it was being well-maintained. There was crew cleaning everywhere, all the time. Some of the tenders were being washed and lowered at ports for testing. And, yes, there was some painting going on. The only bad thing I noticed was one of the mirrors at the corner at the aft (for seeing who was coming the other way...) was missing. The holders were there, just no mirror. The only corner had the mirror. So one had to be careful. There were many people not walking in the 'traditional' direction. (Note, I will not respond to questions asking what I thought was 'traditional'...) The elevators, as always, were crowded. People always seemed to think there was room for them. Sigh. And the elevators just don't seem to be correctly 'timed'...but perhaps that's just my view. But I quickly learned which set of lifts to avoid during which times. (That is, forward, middle, aft...) So, all in all, a pleasant cruise indeed. Plenty of generally quiet places to sit and read. Most folks were friendly and having a good time like me. Did not get bombarded with sales stuff, the photography staff was well-behaved. Yes, I would book again.
I enjoyed it so much I'm going through cruise-withdrawals and booking 2 more this year. A few things that I specifically liked about this voyage was Northern Lights at the Wheelhouse Bar 8:15-10:00pm each might. I'm low key. Country music, acoustic guitars, low key duos suit me more than either of the other extremes: formal evenings or hard electronic music. This nightly agenda fit my style perfectly. Skywalkers Lounge was well attended and had an appretize each night from a different restaurant. Also great keyboarder (Cristian). The room was surprisingly well maintained for an older ship (2008). Also I really appreciate the gluten free International Cafe options. Food was surprisingly good given that it was cruise ship vegan. No, I'm not known for being a foodie but the plates were pretty and food colorful. Had an issue ordering my medallion but actually boarded faster than those who received their medallions at home.
