Ship Reviews

My wife and I had a wonderful journey on our Anthem of the Seas sailing starting in Singapore and ending in Yokohama. This was our 4th cruise on RCL and we stayed in an Owners Suite. We previously sailed on the Quantum, Ovation and Spectrum of the Seas and found the Anthem to provide a similar high quality experience. The RCL Owners suites on the Quantum class vessels are my wife and my favorite cabins of the 25 sailings we have done on various cruise lines. The Anthem had just exited drydock for maintenance and we found the ship to be in good condition. Unfortunately there were a few problems coming out of maintenance - our cabin's internet router was not working properly and it required several complaints including a message to the hotel manager to get it fixed (initially the internet manager would only offer our money back). Several passengers reported problems with hot water including members of our tour group. We also had a misunderstanding about dining reservations - we arrived to find out most preferred times in both Coastal Kitchen and the main dining room taken. We aren't used to having to make reservations in advance, especially in a suite restaurant. Our concierge was able to secure our requested times without a problem and we later learned you can pretty much walk into the main dining room whenever you want with only a modest wait. The highlight of the cruise was the itinerary, one of the most interesting and enjoyable I have completed. Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taipei, Jeju Island, and Yokohama had rich experiences despite the limited time at each stop. Vietnam was especially intriguing for me given the beauty of the country contrasted against its tragic history as well as the extremes of poverty and wealth in a communist country. Our summary of the ports can be found in our travel blog: rayandtraci.blogspot.com. Some other outstanding features of our cruise included the wide range of activities to meet a variety of interests - bumper cars, roller skating, surfing simulator, skydiving experience, gym, running track, pools, casino etc... We have always found RCL to lead the pack in the onboard activities category. The entertainment was quite good including exceptional performances by the Piano Man Liam Cooper and some fantastic music by the group Goddess. The speed of service at the restaurants we ate at was excellent - some may feel rushed but we welcomed the efficiency. The Starlink internet service was excellent and we were able to stream without difficulty except in places where Starlink was shut down. We found the food to be good, not great but we ate only at the main dining room, Coastal Kitchen and the buffet. Disembarking was a bit odd - everyone had to go thru immigration off the ship on the second to last day of the cruise while docked at Yokohama. Cruisers had the option of just leaving the ship if they prefer, but everyone wanting to spend the last night on the ship had to exit the ship and present their passports - a process that took over 4 hours. Since the ship didn't arrive to Japan until the afternoon, it limited the time for activities. My wife and I just decided to attend a Japanese baseball game that evening. Yokohama has two different cruise ports and we docked at the one farthest from downtown - we had confusion with our taxi driver and I'm sure other passengers did as well.

Anthem of the Seas is a solid ship overall. It’s my 4th Royal Caribbean cruise, my first Alaska cruise and my first Quantum class ship (I’ve done Freedom class and Oasis class in the past). Going into this cruise I was worried the ship wouldn’t feel like a Royal Caribbean ship without typical features like the ice skating rink, the water slides, and just because it was built for cold weather cruises. Fortunately, this ship definitely has a Royal Caribbean feel, and the changes to accommodate indoor cruises are just a new twist on the amenities the brand offers (SeaPlex, North Star, etc). Here are some takeaways from my trip: - I was pleasantly surprised by the public spaces across the whole ship. SeaPlex was a ton of fun for kids and adults, the Solarium is an awesome space for adults with incredible views, the Two70 theater held many of the events over the week and was a nice space, the Music Hall’s 2 deck design worked well. The Royal Esplanade has a different design than the typical Royal Promenade I’ve become accustomed to, but traffic flow was decent and it had lots of life throughout the whole cruise. - for an Alaska itinerary, there were 2 full days at sea to get to / from Alaska going out of Seattle. These sea days were rocky on the ship. I heard many people were visiting the medical facility on our first day at sea. Fortunately, once out of open ocean waters, water in the Inside Passage was smooth. - if you’re counting on outdoor pools being open, don’t book this cruise in May. It was in the low 50s Fahrenheit the whole trip and rained a lot. Our worst weather was heading back out to the Pacific for our day at sea heading south toward Victoria, Canada, and there were 50mph winds and rain. - programming on the ship was pretty good. Good amount of activities, decent variety of events. Event crew are interactive and fun. - the shows were decent. I missed the performances of the ice skaters and the aqua theaters found on other Royal Caribbean ships, and the techy shows at Two70 just can’t fill the gap left by not having those venues on this ship. The comedians were both good, and the theatrical shows at the Royal Theater were good as well. - food was good overall. I did no paid dining options at all on my trip. The windjammer comes a bit repetitive but the food quality is solid, and the main dining room has different options each night which were all very good. - the Alaska itinerary was very good, although I think half day excursions (3-4 hour experiences) are the best way to make the most of each stop as the towns themselves offer shops and restaurants that become repetitive very quickly from town to town. We booked our excursions entirely through Royal, which was smooth, easy and organized. Overall everything went well and if you want to see the Alaskan Inside passage I would definitely recommend!
