LoginSeabourn Sojourn enchants her guests with an array of public areas scaled to encourage a relaxed sociability. One of the most unusual features of Seabourn Sojourn and her sisters is Seabourn Square, an ingenious "living room" that replaces the traditional cruise ship lobby with a welcoming lounge filled with easy chairs, sofas and cocktail tables; making it more inviting and relaxing on a small ship cruise. An enclave in its center houses knowledgeable concierges discreetly seated at individual desks.
Experience Seabourn Sojourn
Seabourn Sojourn (launched 2010), an oceangoing ship with a passenger capacity of just 458 guests, offers spacious accommodations spanning categories ranging in size from 295 to 1,182 square feet of indoor space. Verandas add an additional 65 to 558 square feet of outdoor living area spacious enough for private al fresco dining. All suites feature a comfortable living area, walk-in closet, fully stocked bar and refrigerator filled with seaside favorites. Expansive ocean views are framed by either a picture window or the glass doors of the veranda.
We are experienced cruisers - top mariners with HAL, Elite Plus with Celebrity and also travelled with RCL, NCL Princess and Paul Gauguin. First time however with Seabourn. We did not know what to expect and had a very open mind. First impressions of the ship is that is old, although efforts are made to continuously maintain it, it needs a full dry dock refurbishment. Every aspect of the ship needs to be updated. The staff were exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. Always willing to help and make the trip extra special. The officers were easily accessible and it was very nice to be able to chat to any of them inc. the Captain without any problem. The food in all the dining venues was wonderful however, I cannot say it was any better than that we have experienced on Celebrity in the Retreat Luminae or on a Holland America Ship. The lecturers were very interesting and again it was appreciated that they were all so accessible. The general entertainment in the Grand Salon, and the other venues such as the Club were good, not outstanding. We were irritated that trivia was scheduled for the middle of the day on a sea day which interrupted the day. All other lines we have been on, it has been in the evening before the meal. The Liar's Club which we had wanted to go and see was scheduled at the same time as a religious Friday evening service which was slightly insensitive. The big question is would we go on Seabourn again? We would if the price was right. We stay in a suite on Celebrity and on Holland America. I cannot say that the service, food or public areas were superior on Seabourn at all. We had a marvellous time and enjoyed it immensely but I would always want to check the price of a suite on Celebrity vs Seabourn for a comparable sailing before committing to one or the other. The obvious difference between the two lines are the number of passengers. Seabourn without a doubt being so much smaller is more intimate and staff recognition of guests is very quick. I would say however from our experience staying in the Retreat on Celebrity that the same level of service is given. We very much felt that after the evening show which finished at 10pm that there was really nothing to do if one didn't want to drink. We had a verandah room on deck 7. It was spacious and had plenty of space to store items of clothing and other personal items. A walk in wardrobe/closet. A fridge which could be stocked with whatever drinks one wanted. Again although there was nothing specifically wrong with the room it was old fashioned and "tired". Compared to a Sky Suite on Celebrity there is just no comparison. The Sky Suite is modern and bright and airy. The door to the veranda slides and can be left open whilst moving, the door on Seabourn to the veranda opens outwards and cannot be left open without propping it open. All lighting/heating and curtains on a Sky Suite can be controlled from the phone. On Seabourn it is the traditional buttons and pulling of curtains. Embarkation and disembarkation worked well without any issues. I would not hesitate to recommend Seabourn if it was an itinerary that could not be found on another line, or if the price per night rate was the same as a Celebrity Sky Suite or Holland America Neptune Suite. If there was a choice between all 3 offering the same itinerary and rates, I would probably go to Celebrity as our first choice.
Is Seabourn still having trouble staffing sufficiently, or is it just poor Executive Management decisions that cause the hiccups? All passenger-facing staff are absolutely wonderful & always ready to go the extra mile, so no complaints in that regard. Unfortunately, Seabourn Management needs to be as tuned in to customer needs as they expect their crew to be. Although the food on this voyage seemed noticeable step above our last Seabourn cruises, Seabourn ships desperately need a FACTUAL pastry chef. It's as if they board 200#'s of mediocre pastries at the start of a cruise & then put out the same tired, stale & tasteless stuff day after day after day etc. Very poor quality for a cruise line promoting itself as luxury. Although overall food presentation & quality was vastly improved on this voyage, attempts to get simple items such as a tuna salad, grilled cheese or BLT sandwich, or fish & chips, are apparently far beyond the kitchen's capabilities. Finally placed some tuna in a bowl at the Pool Grill & asked for some mayo & mixed our own, but toast was out of the question for lunch. Same with a BLT, which we assembled ourself for breakfast after requesting mayo. Discussions about fish & chips -- just with the ever-present fries would be OK -- was apparently out of the question. And whoever in Senior Management has mandated that the Club & Observation Bars remain closed during the day is making a huge passenger mistake, especially on Sea Days when every facility on board should be open & operating. Unfortunately, the only choice for a drink during the day on Seabourn ships is the Pool Grill because nothing else is open. You can "request" a beer or wine in Seabourn Square, but each time you do the staff, while pleasant & accommodating, respond like you are making some kind of secret request. Who in Seabourn Management thinks closing Seabourn Square at 6PM is a good idea??? No coffee or ice cream there in the evenings. Observation Bar was a mess of service as it was on 2 other Seabourn ships in 2024. On Sojourn only 1 side of the bar is now set with evening appetizers, & even then it was sloppy & unprofessional. In 4 of the 10 days sailing, guests had to request serving utensils, or plates, or napkins or forks that had been forgotten. Potato chips seemed to be the regular evening fall back, which quickly covered the serving area & floor. Evening apps in Observation seem to be a very troublesome area for Seabourn. Some semblance of communication between the food & beverage department & Herald Staff is needed to provide factually correct information about operating hours in the Club & Observation Bars. Several times in 10 days guests arrived in both to find staff just beginning to set up because of incorrect Herald information. Have never been very impressed by any cruise line entertainment & Seabourn does not change that opinion, but that is just my thoughts so I will not specifically address this issue. Seabourn definitely needs work to improve their shore excursions, & most of the printed Port info provided by the Cruise Director was embarrassingly inadequate. Could access far superior information & maps in 10 minutes on Google than what was provided by Seabourn. Overall the problems we continue to notice, along with others shared among passengers who have sailed Seabourn before, seem to be short-sighted &/or poorly thought out decisions by Senior Executive Management. The onboard staff continue to eagerly go the extra mile to keep guests happy, & housekeeping remains some of the best of all cruise lines we sail. Seabourn remains a solid luxury choice, but the obvious glitches continue to go unnoticed & uncorrected.
When we arrived at the port we had to queue for more than one hour to get onto the ship. Our room was excellent. Staff on board helpful but often not enough staff. Solis restaurant excellent. Main dinning room excellent. Breakfast was a pain. There was never a clean table free. We were not escorted to a table just go in and try and find some free and cleaned. Lunch in the Colonnade was the same. On super luxury ships I expect to be escorted to a clean and suitable table. Not on this trip. Food in Colonnade was OK but that's all. The pool are was fine but on seadays impossible to find a sunbed as they are all "reserved" The ship is NOT wheelchair friendly. To get through the doors to the pool I needed to find someone to hold the door open so that I could get my wife and wheelchair through. To go to the dining room the way was thought the pool area. Two difficult doors to navigate. I have to say that in spite of the above we had a lovely time. Passengers were great and friendly. However we will not be travelling with Seabourn again
