Ship Reviews

Our first trip on Sea Dream 1 was over Christmas 2021 when Covid protocols were still in force. It was, essentially, a glorified beach tour, as many ports were not allowing guests. It was not a big deal for us, as we enjoyed being on the water, relaxing. We had such a good time that we booked back-to-back trips for Christmas 2022. December 15, 2022, we (husband and I) had a direct flight to San Juan, Uber to the ship, easy embarkation. We found many familiar faces on the ship; waiters and bartenders remembered us from our previous trip, which was nice. Even those we did not know greeted us by name! (That's something we love about this ship.) We chose a 2nd level stateroom, as it is just above the waterline, and quite endurable when seas are rough, as higher floor rooms "feel" the seas much more. (Important tip for those prone to sea sickness!) We were greeted by our room Steward with a chilled bottle of champagne. (Champagne flows freely on this ship.) Our itinerary for these two trips was the Virgin Islands (mostly British VI, plus St. John), Anguilla, Nevis, and St. Barts. A variety of outings were offered, and the Activities Director offered daily exploration walks each morning. As the islands are volcanic, this involved a LOT of steep hills and required a bit of stamina. There were many beach excursions as well as water activities off the back of the boat; jet ski, sailing, swimming. Christmas Day featured the Champagne and Caviar Splash, an in-the-surf experience where caviar is served from a paddle board in the surf (held in place by members of the wait staff) while staff pass trays of champagne and Santa arrives via Zodiac. A good time was had by all, mostly Americans who were happy to be in the 80 degree temperatures while "back home" was experiencing a brutal freeze and blizzard. The food was wonderful, very fresh, with a variety of menu choices. Chef was extremely accommodating of dietary preferences, and open to menu suggestions. Our last evening, he made mint chocolate chip ice cream for us! Chef's soups are to die for, the cauliflower soup, especially. I am particularly sensitive to the freshness and preparation of seafood. The seafood on this trip was extra fresh, and prepared perfectly. No chewy/tough shrimp, lobster, or fish! (A perk of small-ship cruising!) An hour prior to the evening meal, a Cocktail Hour was held either in the Ballroom or on the Pool Deck. It featured a variety of nibbles and beverages. You had to be careful to not spoil your appetite! The Activities Director would talk about the next day's port and activities, and the Captain would make announcements. On Christmas, a choir of staff members performed Christmas Carols for us (a motley choir, but very good natured!) and Santa arrived with a bag of gifts for the youngest passengers. (There were a couple of smaller children, and a few teenagers on board.) The spa, staffed by the tiniest Thai women on the planet, provided massages that bordered a fine line between therapy and torture. (So painful that I went back four times! LOL) (Once I returned home, my chiropractor was very pleased with the mobility in my neck, thanks to my "little Thai torturess.") I am certain that a less intense relaxation massage would have been available, but I instructed my therapist to "let her hands tell her" what I needed. Other salon services were also available by appointment. My husband enjoyed a manicure and excellent hand massage! We loved the Piano Bar! Pianist, George (also the "Choir Director"), and Head Bartender, Tomislav, made our evening experiences memorable. They are both patient beyond sainthood, particularly when a group of co-eds got rowdy. The girls were encouraged to take the party to the Top of the Yacht Bar which was better suited for being drunk and singing (badly) at the top of their lungs. Disembarkation day is always my least favorite, but I am comforted that we will be returning next December for our third "Best Christmas Ever!"

Very enjoyable cruise experience with excellent cuisine and menus. Included wines were significantly better than Seabourn selections and food consistently fell into the 4.5-4.7 Google Zagat range, again, far better than a recent 2024 twenty four day Seabourn cruise. Captain, Hotel Director and other senior staff far more engaged with guests than other lines and the casual elegance was much appreciated. Cabins were not as large as some other lines, but were furnished as nicely. Love going to small island ports (most really just beaches) and avoiding the big boats and crowds. In fact, we did not see another ship for the week. Our comparison cruises include Regents, Paul Gauguin, Ponant, Seabourn, Windstar, Belmond (river barge), Aqua Expeditions (Super Yacht), and the privately owned The World. We like small ships, the smaller the better. The last three are top of our list. We had a chance to get to know just about everyone on the cruise and the crew really got to know the guests - very personable service from all including the ranking officers.

This was our first SeaDream cruise and it was the 12 day transatlantic from San Juan to Lisbon. We were two of only 28 guests, and only 2 others were first timers. Just a wonderful experience! After 15-20 cruises over many years and various lines this yacht and it’s crew have changed our future cruising plans. The ship itself is in great shape (and entered a refit period as we left it), and the crew just the best. Exceptional food and plentiful drinks, punctuated by nightly gifts on our bed, one night sleeping on the dream bed at the bow, and the Captain’s treat…stopping mid-Atlantic to swim off the marina deck at the stern. The cabins are very well equipped, with a constantly stocked fridge, high-end toiletries, and great bedding. There are no balconies on the ship, but plenty of comfortable outdoor spaces, including Al fresco dining for breakfast and lunch, as well as dinner by request.
