Ship Reviews

Our third trip onboard Swan Hellenic Diana and each trip has been inspiring and magical. We chose the Atlantic Legacy trip because we had never experienced Portugal, Spain or France from the water. The itinerary of interesting ports; historic UNESCO sites, beautiful scenery and exclusive (included) experiences, coupled with the wonderful Swan Hellenic staff exceed our expectations - once again. While this trip wasn’t as thrilling (or cold) as our previous expedition, it was beautifully unique and totally enjoyable. “See what others don’t” was definitely fulfilled on this trip. There were many, many highlights; private port tasting in the beautiful city of Porto; a walk on the Santiago de Compostela to arrive in front of the cathedral to the sound of bagpipes playing and many pilgrims who were humbled to be there; an absolutely perfect day at Mont-Sain-Michel and the historic city of Saint Malo and a day exploring the beaches of Normandy - wow. It was definitely a trip we won’t forget.

I booked this cruise last minute with no knowledge of Swan Hellenic so didn’t know what to expect. The ship and trip was amazing! My state room was beautifully appointed and extremely roomy compared to other balcony state rooms on other ships. The staff was amazing. The expedition people did a fabulous job. The food service was also delicious and that staff was incredible too. They learned our names immediately and addressed us individually. My steward was very nice and extremely competent. There were no negatives on this trip. The ship was very well appointed and comfortable. Because of the small size I was able to meet and get to know numerous other cruise passengers as well as as staff. The captain was also very accessible and had a fabulous sense of humor. All of the staff seem very knowledgeable and seem to absolutely love their jobs! I have nothing but accolades for the whole trip.

We booked this cruise about a month before departure, and our agent’s package included flights. We prefer to arrive a day or two early when taking an international flight, but we were not offered that option. This caused us some stress, but luckily our flight was on time and we took a taxi to the port. We arrived at 11am and were able to board immediately. Within ten minutes we, and our suitcases, were in our cabin. The balcony cabin was spacious and had more storage space than we could use. It also had ….. a fireplace. Not a real one of course, but a realistic electronic version. It didn’t provide any heat, but added a comfortable ambiance to the room. The bathroom was fine, apart from a rather odd drainage system in the shower which soaked the bath mat and part of the floor. SH Diana is a small ship which accommodates just under 200 guests. On our cruise there were only 90 passengers. Thirty, like us were Canadians, another 30 were a group of Americans who had their own activities and dining area. The remainder were from UK, Australia and other countries. Before dinner the first night we met the expedition team who gave us an overview of what to expect on the cruise. In addition to the included tours, hikes were offered most days and when conditions permitted kayaking was also an option. There were optional tours at extra cost, but we found the included ones to be very interesting. Breakfast and lunch were buffet style, but dinner was served . The menu included a choice of four main dishes, one vegetarian, with appetizers, soup, salad and dessert. The meals were very good, although I thought lunch was not quite up to the standard of the others. For the first few days the weather was cold and windy. Twice conditions made tendering unsafe, but the decision was made to change to a port where we could dock. Tours were rerouted so we could visit the same places. I was impressed that this was achieved seamlessly. We were glad of the parkas SH provided which kept us warm and dry. Unfortunately they ran out of medium size, so I had a large which came down almost to my knees. The staff were unfailingly helpful and polite. Our cabin steward Christian was a gem and the waiters, especially Nino were attentive. We were never waiting for wine or water and many of the staff knew our names within the first couple of days. The weather improved as we approached Iceland. We had an opportunity to cross the Arctic Circle and also a whale watching cruise was included. Evening entertainment was provided by a talented pianist and the expedition team organized game shows on two occasions. We had a late flight so although we had to vacate our cabin by 8am we could stay on board until 12:15 when we had an included shuttle to the airport. I hope we will have the opportunity to travel with Swan Hellenic again, may be to Antarctica.

The ship was immaculate and maintained beautifully throughout the trip. All of the staff were attentive and charming. Personal service was 5star and being a smaller ship we got into smaller ports and fjords so really felt it was like a private tour. The accommodation and all included food and premium drinks were also excellent (not like cantering ). Given all of this (& that the excursions and end of trip professional photos of sites) were included in the price made the overall price great value. The shore trips were varied and with very knowledgeable locals and the on board lectures and engaging expedition team made the time fly by. I have always been skeptical about cruising but I cannot recommend Swan Hellenic offering strongly enough. Being an expedition cruise there was focus on trips and educational activities so better for older children/adults but that’s why I selected this one. I will venture out with them again.

A great trip. SH Diana is a beautiful ship, and the crew and staff take enormous pride in its appearance. Diana has a great restaurant, at its best as good as almost anywhere I've eaten. The itinerary was imaginative and fun, and a good mix of the well down and the truly off the path. Jerome at reception should be a rockstar. Pankaj among the waiters was outstanding. The soup chef deserves a medal for consistent excellence. Mitch in housekeeping was fantastic. Ricky the pianist should be on tv. Francis is a brilliant barman. Just a lovely collection of people who took a real interest in their guests and knew us by name within a day or two of the cruise. The expedition team were superb, effortlessly handling some of the really inclement weather that hit off the west coast of Scotland. Joe and Mark as team leaders were incredibly knowledgeable about the places and nature we saw. Carine was superb on whales. Mike was great at keeping us moving on hikes. I've travelled with several expedition cruise companies before, and SH is always the best.
