Ship Reviews

Wonderful experience! Really good team and service. Unfortunately the Chylian excursion wasn't that good, but excursions in Peru was really nice. Really good that the number of passengers doesn't exceed 100 and the ship wasnt overcrowded. It was a fist cruise experience for us but we really liked it. The most expressive side thing was the Moai statue from the Island of Ista in Lesserena. The geoglyphs in Arica was really exiting. The city of Arequipa with the small copy of Madrid. The flight over the Nazca Lines. According to our observations the Chile is not that touristic place but Peru is. The cruise ship itself is beyond praise. Excellent service crew headed by an experienced captain. Exceptional service on board the ship, including amenities, cabin comfort and stewards' care. Very tasty breakfasts, lunches. And of course dinners, which we looked forward to every evening! As a result, we have already planned a new cruise on board the Swan Hellenic.

We've never been on an Expedition Cruise before and didn't know what to expect. We have travelled for many hundreds of days on traditional cruise lines and enjoyed them (more or less) over the past 27 years. We don't often write reviews unless something significant happened. This cruise was significant. This is the smallest ship we have travelled on (excluding sailing vessels) and were treated to the highest crew to passenger ratio we have seen. In addition, the common spaces including outside decks, lounges, dining areas, library, etc. were never close to capacity (admittedly, the pax load was approximately 100 vs. maximum capacity of about 150). As a result of this smaller size and pax/crew ratio it was not long before 20+ crew knew us by name. It was incumbent upon us to work hard to remember their names as well. By day 6, it felt like one big family as we also got to know many other passengers.. I know that these reviews often talk about things like Food - great 8/10, as good and varied as most cruise lines we've travelled. Accommodation - Amazing storage space, large safe, There was a very attractive modern electric fireplace (holographic) that sparked and crackled but didn't show heat. The TV was a bit tricky to find the channels we wanted at first, but we figured that out, disappointed that the map function was poor (but we've experienced that on many cruises - don't understand the problem), the bow camera only worked for the first few days but we got over that, the bathroom had good storage but the shower had an open door that resulted in quite a bit of water on the floor.. The balcony was great for viewing wildlife and would have been fine for sitting with drink or food, but the cool weather was not conducive to this. Entertainment - being an expedition cruise, the entertainment was our natural environment and we had 7+ naturalists on board who provided us with informative lectures on a regular basis. In addition, a Greenland resident (originally from the UK) was on board to tell us about the unique land we were visiting. A good feature was the fact that lectures and other activities like trivia (natural history) and cooking class could be viewed simultaneously in the cabin on TV. There was only one young person (11 yr old) on the cruise, but she was mature, polite and participated well. There were no child-oriented activities, as such. For passengers with energy left after the days activities, there was a champion pianist/vocalist every evening in the Observation lounge. Many people were up dancing each night. Room Service was excellent, 24 hr, with dining room menu available at Dinner time. We used the service twice and the meal arrived hot, within 15 minutes. Overall, service was also excellent! Our cabin steward was always at our service with a big smile and, in general, the crew appeared very friendly and cheerful. Expeditions: We were required to land using the zodiacs in both Northern Labrador and in Greenland (4 occasions) for which we received training and appropriate clothing. Arctic jackets, both warm and waterproof as well as waterproof backpacks were supplied to all passengers for personal use and to keep!. We always felt safe and secure in the hands of the crew. By very good fortune the weather cooperated and we were mainly warm and dry. If a person did want to get wet, there was a lovely pool at the aft and a hot tub and sauna in the spa area. We never participated, but friends we met did use the spa facilities and enjoyed them very much. Overall, a wonderful trip at a great price. We would highly recommend Swan Hellenic based on our experience. Incidentally, the Arctic jackets came in very handy when we encountered the windy city of Reykjavik, where we spent an extra day.

Just returned from an amazing experience on SH Vega. From boarding in Halifax to disembarking in Reykjavik, the days were filled with wonder and fabulous memories. Not everything was perfect but the overall experience was wonderful. Stateroom was spacious and had more storage than we've ever had in a cabin. There were several drawers, cupboards and hangers left unused. The bathroom had an actual cabinet and two drawers. The shower was large and water pressure and temperature were great! The only complaints in the bathroom were that there was no leg bar for shaving and the water splashed out of the shower quite a bit leaving a soggy bath mat and floor. The in-room fireplace was such a lovely touch. Although it didn't produce heat, the ambiance was delightful. The bed was comfortable, the couch and chair provided options for comfort. The stocked mini bar, snacks and nightly chocolates were definitely appreciated. The staff and crew were always smiling and happily providing wonderful service. They knew our names by day 2! The expedition team were knowledgeable, friendly, approachable and always available for questions or to provide guidance. They were usually on deck and happy to point out wildlife throughout the journey. The ship, although small, had everything necessary for a comfortable sailing. The observation lounge was perfect for gathering and chatting. The food was always fresh, beautifully presented and delicious. The nightly recaps and briefings were helpful and informative although the setup of the observation lounge was not ideal for that purpose. Passenger requests were always considered and usually granted, such as bridge and galley tours. Evening entertainment was top notch with a very talented pianist/vocalist and the occasional fun game. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our fellow passengers. Excursions were provided in each port and were interesting and enjoyable. Safety was stressed at all times. Despite the lack of information prior to boarding, the onboard experience was second to none. We loved our first expedition cruise!

The Seas were a bit rough but we saw remote regions. The lectures were fun and informative. The crew were all welcoming and friendly. The food was excellent. The ship was the cleanest I’ve ever been on. The cabin was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The entertainment was first rate. We had a piano player that had an excellent voice and we danced every night. Fun games and trivia. The zodiac rides were fun and travelling through icebergs was thrilling. Wifi was non existent in places. I didn’t stay in a hotel before or after and would recommend that for this cruise. The servers were all so efficient and friendly. Most even knew my name. The expedition crew helped make the journey fun and very informative. They are all very good at what they do. The expedition leader organized everything so it all flowed smoothly. We could be as busy or relaxed as we wished.

The ship, rooms, food, staff and excursions were unbelievable. More luxurious and interesting than I ever imagined a small ship could offer. We went to such interested places and took off from each port with wonderful people, who had prepared us for what we were going to see and do. On the ship the rooms were extremely large and even had fireplaces! The food was gourmet and beyond. Very fresh, the best seafood, caviar, salads...anything you could imagine. If you want to learn something, there were experts on every topic, and even an astronomer who went star gazing with us several times. The lectures could be viewed from your room if you preferred. The drinks and cocktails were always available and fantastic, plus any other beverage you might want. On the couple of days at sea there were many things to do and see, or relax by the pool or take in the scenery or exercise.
