Travelling to the USA

If you are travelling to the USA the US government have changed the visa waiver program and from early 2009 it is now compulsory to complete the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (otherwise known as ESTA).  Customers travelling to the USA will need to apply for an ESTA prior to their journey with minimum of 72 hours before departure. This online form will replace the green visa waiver form (I94W) which is currently completed whilst en-route to the US. 

Customers should visit the website http://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and fill in the required information.  In most cases a response will be received within seconds determining whether travel to the US has been authorised.  If the application is not authorised then a visa may be requested through the US Embassy.  In some instances customers will need to wait up to 72 hours for authorisation. 

An approved travel authorisation is  valid for two years for multiple entries into the US although a new application will have to be made if a new passport is obtained within the two year period or if the answers to any of the YES/NO questions on the ESTA form change. (Although ESTA is valid for two years (or up to passport expiry whichever is first), you must log on and update your first night accommodation details each time you travel to the USA). 

ESTAs are in addition to the requirement for all customers to submit APIS (advance passenger information scheme). 

Advance passenger information (API)

The law requires airlines to collect advance passenger information for all passengers before travel to or from the USA and certain other countries. Many other countries are in the process of introducing requirements for API.

Information required is

* Passport number
* Passport expiry date
* Country which issued your passport 
* Citizenship
* Full name as it appears on your passport
* Gender
* Date of birth
* Country of residence
* An address in the United States (first night accommodation)

The majority of the information currently required by the US authorities (and other governments) can be collected by 'swiping' most passports through a reader at check-in or by entering it online at the website of the airline you are travelling with.
