Ship Reviews

This cruise was everything we expected it to be. We booked this for a milestone birthday celebration and treated ourselves to a French Balcony Stateroom.. Embarkation was very smooth and we were responsible for out flights and inbound transfers. Team members met us at the location our transfer dropped us off and the service was stress free. Because we were early, rooms were not ready, however a light lunch was served in the lounge. The stateroom was a bit of a surprise as it seemed smaller than expected and the bathroom layout seemed odd, however we had zero issues navigating the room or using the facilities. I would opt for a larger room next time, however it was not a negative for us. The itinerary was amazing. We had great days in each port and participated in at least one excursion per day. This was a Christmas Markets themed cruise and it did not disappoint. It seemed odd to board in Basel and then cruise to Breisach only to return to Basel the next day for an excursion however it ended up being great. Dining was exceptional. Service was slow at times, but we had made new friends and enjoyed the time at the dining table. We were always done in time for the evening entertainment which included both on board team members and external entertainment. All of the staff were tremendously courteous from housekeeping, through dining room staff through to the cruise director (JJ) and ships officers. I would sail on AMA Waterways again in a heartbeat and highly reccommend them to anyone thinking about a river cruise.

Wonderful experience! The entire staff was extremely helpful, courteous and professional. The food was well prepared and always had a local flair provided by the head chef. The snacks were always available at most any time of day or night. Our stateroom was roomy (for a ship) and the cleaning staff made sure you had a clean and refreshing place to come back to each evening after each shore excursion. Each docking station featured a town on the Rhyne that exhibited it's own special culture and scenic architecture. Each stop featured a local guide well versed on all the local details and offered tips on "do not miss" opportunities that strangers would never know about. The local sidewalk coffee shops and cafes offered a refreshing and relaxing stop along the way. Every town offered many shops and boutiques offering many souvenirs and other items to take back home. Every excursion offered a choice of biking, normal walking or "gentle" walking. Everyone could choose the level of activity that suited them. Perhaps the most relevant person for anyone taking a cruise was the Cruise Director. Our guy was absolutely fabulous. He took care of every detail. You were never left to "fend for yourself". The dining staff made sure you got to know them personally and treated every guest as if they were special. All in all, I could not have asked for a better experience.

Activities - The excursions were amazing. Guides very informative. John (the cruise director) was very organized and made it easy to join the cruise via bus and meeting places. Especially liked the cathedrals, fortress and spyre. Glad we did the pre-cruise to Lake Como. It was totally worth it and the hotel was top notch. Service - Crew was ready to help and answer questions. Dining - Servers were ready to help with preferences and suggestions. Chief's table was outstanding. Food at meals was okay. Oatmeal was runny, tuna melt was too fishy (should not be served), eggs overcooked. The fish was great and plating was very nice. Variety of choices was great. Schnitzel was outstanding. Cabin - Very small. Our stateroom was cleaned but not vacuumed well (found old pills, dust and crumbs on floor), sink not wiped out from toothpaste or hairs. Furniture was very dated and needs to be refurbished. Hallway needs air freshener as it has a stale, bad smell. Plugs for USV ports needed. Entertainment - too tired to join entertainment Disembarkation -very organized, easy to follow John's instructions. John was the best cruise director we have had. He was so informative, organized and made the cruise well worth it. Comments: Food on our previous cruise with Celebrity was far better and I guess we expected it to be similar. Since AMA has been bought by another company, we did not sign up for future cruises. Not sure what changes are ahead.

Our cruise on the AMA Serena was just lovely. We were able to ride bikes through the vineyards, stop at a winery, enjoy a lovely gondola ride above the vineyards, tour some beautiful towns, sailed through the Rhine with its picturesque castles and scenery, and took some afternoon swims in the heated pool. On board, our room was great with a wonderful housekeeper that came by twice a day, the restaurant had delicious food, amazing service, and several choices of wine each evening. Or evening at the chef's table was a night to remember as well. Several courses were served and wines were paired with each course. Desserts, delicious! Entertainment on the ship was lots of fun. We had a gentleman that sang Neil Diamond classics, a trio of String Instruments that were excellent, and another singer that was great and lots of fun. We also had an on board pianist, singer, and DJ who did a wonderful job. Our cruise manager was outstanding. He worked very hard to provide everything we asked for. He was fun, personable, and very competent. All in all, we had a wonderful experience!
