From reading some of the reviews I think that MSC's opposition is paying people to write bad reviews. Our experience for my family of eight on board at Aurora level , was we all agreed , very good. But lets be clear. This is not a cruise ship that is suited to people who don't like being on board with lots of other people or who are looking for a gourmet experience for beer money.. There are six thousand on board - but the facilities can easily cope. Yes, it is busy around the pool but we found plenty of quiet spots to sit and to have breakfast or lunch. Having set the scene - here is our experience in summary. Boarding - no problem. Quick efficient. Cabin - very nice, clean. Eating arrangements: Buffets on floors 19 and 18 with plenty of seating. Compliments to the staff who are so busy all the time clearing tables and wiping the floor. No problem with crowding (where do people get this stuff on other reviews??) Choices excellent and different every day. Caters for vegetarians and vegans no bother. Dinner was in Bubbles restaurant. Dinner menus varied and excellent. None of us found complaint - including my 15 and 17 year old grandchildren who are very fussy. Staff service exceptional. Entertainment to a very high professional standard- not the crew doing a fill in!! Value for money - definitely. Yes they do charge for extras if you want them - but that's actually better than paying a higher price for stuff you don't need or want. No gratuity payment added on at the end- all included. Great! Children found things to do in evening teen club but mainly came with us adults on day trip out. No problem at all getting back on or off the ship at ports (where do other reviewers get their complaints from!!) Negatives: Free Wi fi non existent. Couldn't get it to work at all. Some paid for (exorbitant) wi -fi ships service. But can use phone at ports to access internet. cost of excursions- too much when you're paying for eight. We managed to get taxis to take us to where we wanted to go for a lot less. Tips - avoid cabin 15124. It is opposite a crew exit for luggage and was causing disturbance all night long. Getting off in Marseille for flight boarding at 10.10 we were first off the boat at 08.10am carrying our own luggage to a pre-booked taxi and got to the airport in plenty of time. Used a taxi service called Welcome and and found them very efficient - even if not the cheapest. As a group of eight we wanted to go to Herculaneum on the Naples stop. We found an eight seater for 175 Euros to take us there, wait an hour and a half and return. He is giuseppetaxinapoli@gmail.comhe may do other trips too. All in all avery good trip. great value for money. Lovely and helpful staff. Pay no attention to those who write rubbish negative reviews. We've done other cruises and this was a good as any, if not better ,one.
Me and my (now) wife went on our honeymoon cruise on the MSC World Europa sailing from Barcelona and doing a Western Med itinerary. We sailed in the Yacht Club for the special occasion. It was my 2nd time in the MSC YC and my wife's first. First the pros of our cruise (YC specific): - room is gorgeous in the YC. For the price, arguably the best room at sea when price compared - YC service is seriously the best at sea. We never waited more than a few moments for anything in the lounge, room, restaurants, or drinks at the pool deck. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating - speaking of YC spaces: the restaurant and lounge were phenomenal. The lounge is expansive, with quick service, live music nightly, and daily events. Plenty of seating. The restaurant was spacious, service was outstanding, and the food was above average for a cruise every night. Neither me or my wife ate anything we would have considered below average. Some average or decent items, sure, but almost everything was very good. - Our Junior Butler (shoutout Jonny) was AWESOME! Super friendly and made up our room 2x per day, stocked our mini fridge, and greeted us coming on and off the boat. Almost everything you think your Butler does, is probably something your junior butler (room steward) is doing. Cons of the YC: - my previous YC sailing was on the MSC Seashore. The pool deck was massive and gorgeous. The pool on MSC World Europa is maybe the worst pool I have seen on any boat. It was a 10x10 box, tucked into a corner in the shade. Minimal seating around the pool. 1 tiny hot tub, occupied by kids the entirety of the 2 days we spent on the boat. Water was cool as pool was in the shade. Really negative experience when you compare other MSC YC ships and options with the Haven, Retreat, etc. - YC bar and grill has totally changed. No more buffet. Sit down and order, with a more limited menu than what the buffet previously offered. The buffet in YC on Seashore was seriously one of the highlights of the experience and the fact that is no more is disappointing. - I said this on my last cruise also, but the YC 24/7 Butler experience is overblown. Unless you are comfortable calling for your butler throughout the day (most aren't) their service is really limited to telling you about the YC Day 1, and then getting you off the ship at each port or walking you (slowly) around the boat for meals or shows. - YC is TOO BIG on MSC World Europa. Spans decks 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22. 7 floors. 150+ rooms and 350+ people. The idea behind it is a self contained privacy and it has now opened up to far too many folks/families. Our room was deck 16. We had to take elevators up to 19, 20, 21 to get anywhere of importance and that included a walk around the entire cabin area of the deck 16. Not like my previous experience at all, which was nice. - TOO MANY KIDS!!!!!! Almost everyone in the YC was a family with many young kids. This led to kids running around the lounge, restaurant, pool, splashing through the pool and hot tub, yelling around outside, etc. I fully get that MSC is a family cruise line and that has been there stated response to MANY complaints about kid behavior in YC. That said, something needs to be done. YC is a premium experience that people are paying 3x normal cruise fare for. Either there needs to be rules about where and when kids can be at certain places, forcing parents to take better ownership of their kids, or banning kids under the age of 12 (or whatever age) entirely. Not sure. But it isn't sustainable, and many folks were complaining about the noise, disruptions, rudeness, etc. - Not 100% MSC's fault, but one of our excursions in France was a YC only wine tour. It was really, really expensive and ultimately got cancelled. We found out at 10 PM the night before (excursion was 8 AM) that it was cancelled. Not only were we super bummed it got cancelled but it left us 1 option for available rebookings which was a 4 hour walking tour that was not at all a great experience both due to guests on the tour literally fighting on the excursion and also the guide not meeting our expectations. There has to be a better way and I don't understand why even if it was just the 2 of us the tour could not run. General MSC WE Pros: - boat is gorgeous. Everything super nice. - Master of the Seas (British pub) was a lot of fun and offered a ton of great draft beer options, live music, trivia, etc. - Entertainment was awesome. After a few NCL cruises that left us disappointed last year, MSC really stepped up. Shows were all phenomenal. More on shows below though... - Itinerary was great. Almost full days at every stop, and even when we stopped at Naples at 12 Noon we had until 8 PM to explore. No 3 or 4 hour stops, all at least 7 or 8 hours long. - We ate at both Hola Tacos and Kaito Sushi Bar as specialty. Both were super affordable and great meals. - Speakeasy was AWESOME! Go later at night. We went 9 PM and ran out of gas (and didn't want to keep paying for drinks LOL) at like 1030 PM. Stays open til 1. - Parties were awesome. Silent Disco especially. General Cons: - Too many young kids everywhere until super late at night. We are American. Must be a European thing. Shows would start at 11 PM and there would literally be 3 year olds running around the theatre without parents nearby ruining the show for everyone around. It was bizarre. Kids at parties until 1 AM. Totally inappropriate. Easy fix is what a lot of the American cruises already do. Later shows are 18+ and parties are 18+ starting at 1130 PM. 10 PM on requires adult supervision for anyone under 12. Me (28) and my wife (28) were getting carded to get into the NCL nightclub last year after 10 PM to limit kids and those under 18. Although it was annoying, it made for a 10x better experience at these later shows and parties. - App is confusing. It didn't impact me directly as I am pretty tech savvy but if not, it can be super confusing and hard to navigate. I really saw the impact at shows and events. 10 minutes after things started MASSIVE hoards of families and people would show up. No one knew where things were or when they started. - MSC in general outside of the YC is simply not worth it. I would not ever do it. The overall quality drops significantly. Although RCCL, NCL, Virgin, etc are more expensive their general balcony rooms are nicer, service is better, food is better, less crowded, less kids, etc, etc, etc. YC (for roughly the same price as some of those other lines) is such a step up though.
