Ship Reviews

We took the mardi gras cruise that left the saturday of mardi gras. Getting on the boat was a mess, very long lines, everything took hours and once we got on the boat it was 9pm before we saw our bags. Once we got our bags and all it was a good trip. We did the following specialty dining: Pincho: 10/10 everything was great. Le bistro: 9/10 french onion soup & bread was amazing. Bayamo: 9/10 Appetizer's were amazing our Seabass was a little fishy Food Republic: 10/10 Everything was great Tepanyaki: 5/10 food was bad but they credited it back. Cagneys: we did on a previous ship (bliss) and it was good. Late night food the reuben at the irish bar is good. Room service breakfast you can write in avocado toast on the door hangtag and they will bring it. Very good as well. The supper club was awesome, tina turner show and chicken parm were great and free. Starbucks package fyi they do not have a full cafe on the escape, you can get espresso drinks, lattes, frappuccino’s and they will ice any tea for you but they brew it fresh so it takes 5 minutes. No specialty drinks at all other than that. Ports we missed two of four because of high winds. Apparently the escape used to always dock in roatan now they tender and it was too rough for the tenders which was a bummer. We also missed costa maya because of high winds. Cozumel is anywhere mexico. One hidden gem right off the ship is chi, it’s an asian noodle place all the staff goes to eat. Very good and there is a good coffee shop across the street called b&co. Belize i’d say definitely book a mainland ferry and excursion. The island was pretty but very expensive. Two beers and two shots at the swim up bar is $100 usd. Drinks on the boat i’d recommend seeing ricardo at the tobacco road bar. Great espresso martinis, old fashions and apperol spritz. This is the place for a cocktail. Definitely do the mojito tasting at the mojito bar! Freddie and happy were both great bartenders as well. Casino was good to us and cruise director staff was cool. Overall the boat was in decent shape and everyone was good to us, specially with two unplanned sea days. As far as taking the boat out of new orleans? Getting off the ship was easy. Super fast, we parked in the laz parking for i think $180 for the week. Well worth it. That parking garage is tight fyi. I drive a ram 1500 and it just fit. If you have a lifted truck it will not fit. The cruise port is right across from cesar’s casion which is brand new and smoke free. Definitely think it’s a great port but unless you really want to see mardi gras i’d pick another weekend to get on or off the boat. The saturday before fat tuesday, ash wednesday is when we got on and it was very hectic. If you do board during that or jazz fest buy the priority embarkation.

A great experience. We had actually sailed with Norwegian 12 years ago and had a aft penthouse suite with butler and consierge. we had a private restaurant for breakfast and lunch only and were not in the haven. We wanted to elevate out experience to the haven. It was worth the money for the most part . One thing I love about Norwegian is not as many children. We enjoy our grandkids but like to cruise without kids. We wer aboard the ship almost immediately escorted by I think one of the consierge team to our muster station where they scanned our key card took a few seconds then escorted to our private lounge. We had a private lounge for Haven guest only as well as a private restaurant for all 3 meals. Also a private pool and several hot tubs in the Haven area as well as on the upper deck. We had the inclusive drink package and I really liked the fact that they made it easy to see which beverages (alcohol and wine) were no charge and which were not. At every venue. In the Haven Restaurant you can get lobster for dinner surf and turf at no additional charge however any other restaurants including the specialty restaurants there was an upcharge. So you pay $60 bucks at Cagneys and if you want lobster its an additional $35 bucks? If you eat in the general dining you can get lobster for $35 bucks without the $60? We ate once in general dining and it was lacking I found. Weak menu choices unless you went with the upcharge. I found the Filet Mignon in the 3 venues I ordered it to be ok but better at Texas Roadhouse so not top quality. Deserts were always fantastic. Over all the food was great where we ate. There is alot to do on the ship. Hard to decide there is so much to do. As a Haven guest we were escorted to the shows by the consierge and had front row seating. Sometimes our butler escorted us to a meal and when they do the elevator doesn't stop . We had a great time and highly recommend even if you don't do The Haven

We chose Norwegian for our three generation cruise because we thought that the children's programs might be better. Certainly, the ocean view family cabins on deck 5 near the kids' area were very spacious, including three closets. And they featured bathtubs for bathing the little ones. My husband's and my upgraded club balcony cabin did not have enough storage. Having sailed the Regal Princess three weeks earlier made the contrast that much greater. I knew that Norwegian has these hangers where you can only remove the bottom part (presumably since their guests would otherwise steal the hangers), so I had brought a package of twelve plastic ones for easy rearranging of at least some of our clothes. We still did not have enough hangers, and our clothes were crowded. Our two grandsons, ages three and six, attended the kids' program only once, and did not want to go back. Our 16 month old granddaughter liked the Guppies kids' area, though. It's designed so that a parent accompanies the child in the play area. And since even three year olds can go there, my son's two children both went there. The guppies program provided a nearby, indoor play area for my two youngest grandchildren. Another point in Norwegian's favor was the quick service in Taste and Savor, two of the complimentary MDRs. Princess meal service is so slow that I don't think that the little ones could have lasted, but Norwegian made it a priority to get the children their food even before the adults were served. Wise move, and it made dinners very pleasant. Norwegian and Princess both provide bathrobes for cabin use when requested. The larger balcony cabins on both lines offer bathtubs, though Princess bathtubs are slightly wider and much more comfortable. They both have retractable clotheslines in the bath for convenient drying of wet swim wear. Norwegian not only had fast food service in the dining rooms, but they also had better food than Princess. Bar service was also excellent. But I did miss the elegance of a Princess cruise. Being on a Princess cruise is like stepping into a four star hotel's lobby. Being on Norwegian also feels like being in a four star hotel, but you are in the conference room with wood paneling and folding chairs. Really. They did not have enough seating in the area where the guest services, coffee bar, and loud guest activities were conducted, so they had folding chairs. Lots of them. Everyday. And the decor of the ship featured a lot of brown, with orange accents. Not really an ocean type of decor scheme. More like a 1970's wood paneled, basement feeling. There are other details that struck me as cheap. Cabins are serviced only once per day, not twice. The coffee "table" in the cabin is a footstool that converts into a tiny table if you put a wooden panel on top. The provided shampoo is awful. Princess had room darkening curtains, or the option of a sheer privacy curtain that lets in the light. Norwegian only has room darkening curtains, or no curtains at all so that some ship berthed beside you has full view into your cabin. The atrium is a not-so-grand two stories. And the library is open a maximum of four hours per day on a sea day. I guess they figure their guests would steal the books if not monitored by a crew member? Boarding was annoying. All three cabins of us immediately got on line to get 11:30 boarding as soon as Norwegian notified us that it was time to check in. But later, my daughter-in-law realized that their time slots had disappeared. And when she checked in for a second time, Norwegian gave their family of four people three different check in times! Maybe Norwegian did this to a lot of families, and everyone did what we did - wait to board until the last boarding time issued to one of our family members, because there were a lot of people boarding at one o'clock. My husband and I had sailed on the Norwegian Encore two years earlier, and I was eager to see The Choir of Man show again. But they had changed the songs (probably to showcase a tenor instead of a bass), and they also eliminated the surprise feeling at the end of the show. I was sorry that my adult kids did not get to see the better performance. This time it was good, but it was not great. There is no self service laundry on Norwegian. A bag of laundry can be done for $34. But you get these sticky tags on your clothes that pull off fibers from the clothing when removed. And my son's bag of laundry came back with one sock missing, and my son-in-law's laundry came back with a shirt and shorts missing. Luckily, the shirt went to my son's cabin, so at least that was retrieved. So add the cost of replacing clothes to the cost of having clean laundry. We love sailing to the western Carribbean ports. Cozumel is our favorite. We either go to the Money Bar for easy access snorkeling (we bring our own gear though supposedly you can rent some there), or we go to Buccano's for its pool and a spot of sandy beach. We have brought beginning snorkelers to the Money Bar in the past because when you climb into the ocean on their ladder, you end up standing in chest high water. This is perfect for beginners! Buccano's is an uncrowded place to relax, and someday we're going to be there when the water is calm and we can check out the snorkeling. But the entrance fee of $20 each works for us since it is applied to our food and drink purchases. This time in Roatan we tried the Infinity Bay Resort. They picked us up at the port for a $25 transportation fee per person, round trip. About 25 minutes later we arrived and paid for the lowest level of pass (bronze?) and went into a beautiful hotel area with two large pools and plenty of loungers set slightly above the public beach area. The waves were such that snorkeling was not an option, though patrons at the bar assured us that the snorkeling is usually very good. So we played in the waves with the delighted grandchildren, swam in one of the pools, and bought food and drink right by the pool. If we ever vacation in Roatan for a week, this would probably be the place to stay. Norwegian's private island in Belize had tons of beach loungers and lots of beach. The water stayed shallow, slowly getting deeper as you went way out. It was very safe for children. The water was still a little stirred up when we got to Belize, but even with the visibility down, we could do some snorkeling. We saw a conch so close that I could see its little tail sticking out. We saw anemones, sergeant majors, starfish and parrot fish. Not amazing snorkeling, but it was something after having such rough seas in our previous stops. And we saw a barracuda sitting motionless among the mangrove roots by the pier. Both the Regal Princess cruise and the Norwegian Escape cruise cost the same for the cruise, beverage, and wi fi package. When going with small children, Norwegian is probably the better choice. But for adults, I would always go with Princess.

Absolutely loved the ship and experience on the Norwegian Escape. This was my 15th cruise, 4th on Norwegian. My last cruise was on Royal Caribbean. Norwegian is better in every area - especially the quality and variety of dining and the bars and bar staffing. The steak I ate at Cagney's American Steakhouse was one of the best I have ever had. La Cucina, the Italian specialty dining, was excellent as well and accommodated a special request. The cabin, an outside with a window, was roomier than I expected, and I was particularly impressed with the bathroom arrangement, which includes a glass-enclosed shower. Our RCL balcony cabin had a shower curtain. NCL boarding experience went quickly and smoothly. Inside the Port of New Orleans, disembarkation went well, but the Port's limited access to transportation (not NCL's fault) tends to be more frustrating and takes longer than at any other port. It was our first time at Harvest Cay, which is lovely. We rode the Black Swan, an electric boat, for a tour around the area and had an excellent time. The captain was very knowledgeable and proud of Belize, and we learned about the history, economy, food, and daily life in the country. The beaches were clean, and the landscaping and foliage on the island are fantastic. My wife really enjoyed the butterfly house and the free wildlife experience. We also had some of the best pina coladas ever. As a rum person, I appreciated the variety of Belizean rums that could be purchased, as well as Cuban rum in the duty-free liquor store.
